After completing Step 1, you will be directed to a page where you can either define the entire custom grouping from scratch or make adjustments to match your specific needs if you chose a template in Step 1.

Let's go through the following steps:

1. Select the required data source

It starts with defining groups for the required data sources:

This is the key and true power of custom groupings in Alvie. By defining, for example, 'Paid Search' for Google Ads, Microsoft Ads, and Google Analytics 4, we enable Alvie to stitch data together across platforms and obtain true cross-channel insights.

Keep in mind that the data sources you would like to work with have be connected to Alvie. You can do this by following the instructions in this guide before starting to create a custom grouping. Alternatively, you can connect your data sources within the custom grouping flow whenever you see the button saying 'Connect your first data source'.

To start creating a group for a required data source, simply click on the 'Create groups' button on the right side of each data source name or click on the plate with the name of the required data source.

2. Enter a name for your group

A data source can have as many groups defined as you'd like, but we usually recommend not exceeding 20-30 groups to avoid excessive data fragmentation.

Once you press the 'Create groups' button, you will be presented with an interface that allows you to create a group. Begin by giving your group a name.

1. If you create a brand new custom grouping, the field with the name of the group will be empty. In this case, you can give your group any desired name, such as 'Paid search' or 'My first group'. The suggestion menu will indicate that no group with such a name has been identified in the current custom grouping:

Therefore, simply press 'Enter' when you are satisfied with the name.

2. If you have already created several groups within this custom grouping and are creating a new group, the suggestion menu will provide hints with the existing group names:

As you write the name of your new group, Alvie will attempt to match it with groups that you have already defined for other data sources in this custom grouping. This is done to ensure that you don't accidentally misspell the name, which could result in the link across data sources being broken.

3. Create a condition to build your group

The next step is to create the conditions that determine whether a single row of data from a required data source should be included in this group:

Conditions include several parameters to consider, such as:

  • Dimension. For example: Source, Medium, Campaign, etc.

  • Operator. For example: contains, doesn’t contain, etc.

  • Value. For example: the name of the Campaign, specific Source or Medium, etc.

Standard AND/OR logic available through the buttons in the interface.

If you use the Operator 'Matches regex', the value you enter in the Value field will be case-sensitive. For all other Operators, the value you enter in the Value field is not case-sensitive.

Once you have finished building the condition for your group, simply click the 'Save new group' button to save the newly created group.

Let's consider an example. Suppose we want to create a group for Google Analytics 4 specifically for 'Paid search' traffic. In this case, a suitable condition would be to include only data where the source/medium is 'google/cpc':
