What is happening?
Alvie cannot automate data movement or handle certain reporting solutions because the BigQuery Data Transfer Service (DTS) is inactive in your Google Cloud Project.

Error: BigQuery Data Transfer has not been enabled in the Google Cloud Project targetGCPProjectID. Please go to Google Cloud Platform and ensure BigQuery Data Transfer is enabled, or use a different project.

Why did this happen?
This error typically occurs when the specialized API required for scheduled and managed data movement hasn't been activated. Common causes include:

  • Prerequisite Service Inactive: Unlike standard BigQuery, the Data Transfer API often requires manual activation even if the main BigQuery API is on.

  • New Project Setup: The project was created without the full suite of data integration APIs enabled.

Follow these steps to resolve the issue:

To enable the BigQuery Data Transfer Service, you have to be granted the Owner role for your project.

  1. Navigate to External Platform: Open the BigQuery Data Transfer API page in the Google Cloud API Library.

  2. Locate the Source: Ensure your project [targetGCPProjectID] is selected in the project picker at the top of the page.

  3. Action: Click the blue Enable button.

  4. External Steps: If prompted to set up billing, ensure a valid billing account is linked, as the Data Transfer Service requires an active billing profile.

  5. Verify: Return to Alvie and trigger a manual rerun of the affected reporting solution or connector. Wait 2–5 minutes for the status to turn Healthy (Green).

Prevention & Tips To avoid seeing this error again:

  • API Checklist: When onboarding a new project to Alvie, proactively enable the BigQuery API, BigQuery Data Transfer API, and Cloud Resource Manager API.

  • Check Role Permissions: Ensure the account used for setup retains "Owner" or "Editor" status to prevent API-level access issues.

  • Still need help? For additional details, you can refer to the official GCP Data Transfer documentation. If you continue to see this error, please don't hesitate to reach out to the Alvie support team.

If you encounter any further issues or need additional assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out to the Alvie support team.
