Monitoring budgets and targets is crucial for managing markets and channels effectively and ensuring that your marketing spend aligns with your business goals. Setting up budgets and targets helps you track if you're on course, avoid overspending, and make adjustments as needed to optimise performance.
1. Setup budgets and targets for the Precis Starter report
Before enabling budget and targets in the Performance metrics panel, make sure you have added Budgets and/or targets to the Precis starter report. Learn how to set up budgets and targets here.
2. Enable Budgets and Target on the Home Page
In the top-right corner of the Home page, locate the More icon (represented by three dots). Click on it to reveal additional options.
To enable or disable the display of budgets and targets on the Home page, simply toggle the Show Budget and Targets option on or off in the Budgets and Targets panel.
For detailed validation:
After enabling, you can see specific breakdowns, such as channels with budgets but no spend or channels with spend but no budget assigned.
Hover over the links (e.g., “3 channels have spend and no budget”) to reveal a detailed list of these channels, as shown in the image.
This validation helps you ensure that all channels are correctly configured according to your budget and target requirements.
Click Update Settings to save your changes in the bottom right corner.
3. Using Budgets and Targets Metrics on the Home Page
Once budgets and targets are enabled, you can utilise multiple tools on the Home page to monitor your performance. These include the Progress Over Time chart and the Detailed Report table, allowing for comprehensive tracking of your spending and target achievements.
A. Progress Over Time Chart
The Progress Over Time chart visualizes your metrics over a specified period, helping you compare actual performance to budgets and targets.
Enabling Comparison:
Toggle the Compare this switch to add budgets (for Ad Spend) and targets (for Conversion Value) as reference lines on the chart.
Comparison Options:
Ad Spend vs. Budget: View how your actual ad spend aligns with your budget over time.
Conversion Value vs. Target: Track how closely your conversion values are meeting your set target.
Viewing Modes:
Daily View: Shows day-by-day performance against budget or target.
Cumulative View: Displays cumulative totals to track overall progress over the period.
B. Detailed Report Table
The Detailed Report table provides a breakdown of your performance metrics by channel and market, offering a granular view of your budgets, targets, and actuals.
Metrics in the Table:
Ad Spend and Conversion Value: Track actual spending and conversions, with percentage changes for context.
Budget and Remaining Budget: See allocated budgets and the remaining amount for each channel.
Target and Remaining Target: View targets and the remaining values needed to reach them.
Depletion Metrics:
Target Depletion: Shows the percentage of the target that has been achieved, helping you understand progress toward conversion goals.
Budget Depletion: Indicates the percentage of the budget that has been used, providing insight into spending efficiency.
Total Summary:
The totals row at the bottom of the table aggregates values for each metric, offering a quick overview of your overall ad spend, conversions, budget, target, and depletion rates.
Sorting and Filtering:
Use sorting and filtering options within the table to focus on specific channels or markets, enabling detailed analysis where needed.
The Metric Selection panel allows you to customize which metrics appear in both the Progress Over Time chart and the Detailed Report table, tailoring the view to focus on the most relevant data.
Date Segmentation in the Detailed Report Table
The Date dimension is available in the Detailed Report table, allowing for more precise time-based analysis of your metrics. By including the Date column, you can view daily performance for each channel and market, enabling a clearer breakdown of Ad Spend, Conversion Value, and other metrics over time.
To add the Date dimension:
Open the Select Columns panel on the right side of the screen.
Under Dimensions, check the Date option.
This feature is especially useful for users who want to analyze trends or observe daily variations across different channels and markets, providing an additional layer of insight into budget and target tracking.
Using Filters for Granular Views
Use sorting and filtering options directly in the table to focus on specific channels or markets.
The filtering feature on the Home page allows you to refine your view by applying filters for Channel, Market, and Date. This enables you to get more specific insights into particular segments, making it easier to focus on the data that matters most to you.
How to Apply Filters
Open the Filters Panel:
Click on Add filters on the Home page to open the filtering panel.
Channel and Market Filters:
You can filter data by specific Channels (e.g., Paid Search, Social Media) or Markets (e.g., Denmark, Finland, Norway).
This is useful for isolating the performance of specific channels or geographic areas, allowing for more focused analysis.
Date Filter:
Use the Date filter to select a specific time range. This helps in analyzing data for a particular period, making it easier to track progress, seasonal trends, or short-term campaign impacts.
Creating Filter Conditions:
In the filters panel, select the operator (e.g., "is" for exact match) and then choose the desired values for Channel, Market, or Date. This allows for quick, customized filtering.
Shareable Filtered Views
Once you apply filters or select specific metrics in the chart and table, these settings are automatically saved in the URL. This makes it easy to share a customised report view with colleagues within the same workspace. Simply copy the URL from the address bar and share it, allowing others to access the same filtered and customised view without needing to reapply settings themselves.
By using filters and metric selection effectively, you can achieve a more granular view of your data, focusing on the specific segments or time frames most relevant to your analysis and reporting needs.
